A masterpiece of "giyofu" (imitative Western-style) architecture.

Yamagata City Local History Museum (former Saiseikan Hospital) / 山形市郷土館【旧済生館本館】

The former Saiseikan Hospital was built as a prefectural hospital on the orders of Michitsune Mishima, the first prefectural governor of Yamagata. Construction was begun in February 1878 and completed in September of the same year, and in December 1878 the building was named "Saiseikan" by Sanjo Sanetomi, a nobleman and statesman at the time of the Meiji Restoration. In addition to serving the needs of the local people as a prefectural, and later municipal, hospital, Saiseikan is also recognized as a masterpiece of "giyofu" (imitative Western-style) architecture of the early Meiji period and was designated a National Important Cultural Property in 1966.
