Minami Tokamachi
Yamagata city’s Minami Tokamachi district developed alongside the old Ushu Highway during the Edo period.
Lodging houses in the Mikkamachi and Yokamachi areas catered to pilgrims travelling to the Dewa Sanzan, or “three sacred mountains of Dewa,” and stores selling souvenirs and other goods in the Tokamachi area did a thriving business from spring until autumn.
However, the Meiji era saw the development of railways and other transportation systems, and the lodging houses gradually disappeared. While fires also destroyed many of the old buildings, some shops which have been open since the Edo period remain in business today, allowing us to still catch a glimpse of what used to be.
